Ska punkers The Irregulars help kick off Stow Festival 2012 with a free gig at The Duke’s Head on Stow Festival Thursday. We chatted to Irregular Rob Hull about what they have planned.
Hey Rob. This is your first appearance at Stow Festival, what attracted you to play the festival?
The idea of a festival in the heart of a community, and which helps to celebrate and promote that area, is such a powerful thing for us. It’s great to be involved. We were aware of the festival last year and really want to be part of it as it grows and develops. There’s a great line-up to look forward to, and it shows how exciting, and diverse, live music can be.
How would you describe the sound of The Irregulars?
Joyous, fun, and for everyone. Ska, and 2 Tone, rocksteady, whatever name you want to give it, is just such a dynamic and captivating style of music to play. We defy anyone not to dance when we hit the groove!
What can people expect from your show?
The magic is in the setlist, and the fact that we love the songs we play. All of us really get into the tunes and look to take the crowd with us. In the midst of all the dancing there’s plenty of opportunity for a singalong. We love it when the crowd are an extra backing vocalist. Oh…and I should say smartness, too, definitely smartness, we are a well turned-out band.
You guys have played a lot of different types of gigs, from pub gigs to parties and weddings. What is the best type of show to play?
One of the best things about playing is that each show is special, for whatever reason. It might be that the crowd goes crazy from the start, or that they sense what a great version you’ve just done of a tune that’s important to them. For us, weddings are great for anecdotes, after the event – there’s just something about the atmosphere – but pub gigs are a favourite because it’s such a natural place to enjoy great music. We hear the Walthamstow crowd is a great one, so obviously we’re looking forward to what the special moment will be this time.
What’s next for The Irregulars in 2012 after Stow Festival?
We’ve got a busy couple of months ahead of us. We’re playing a cracking ska night on 22 September, in Bedford, for anyone who fancies taking the short hop up the M1 to see us. The Ska Masters, another top ska band, are on the bill with us. You can get tickets here.
On 11 October we’re at the O2 Academy 2 Islington, playing a tribute concert for UK troops.
There’s also a couple of corporate gigs we have lined up and our Christmas gig to plan for. There’s always something happening. To keep up to date people can visit our website, or follow our progress on Facebook.
The Irregulars play The Duke’s Head on Thursday 20 September from 8pm. Entry is free. Here’s the Facebook event page, so let us know if you’re coming!
