What is The Stow Festival?
The award-winning Stow Festival was established in 2011, with the theme of “Music takes over Walthamstow”. It runs across a weekend in September. The past six festivals have featured an amazing (and exhausting) array of over 200 bands and artists, and we have used 40 different venues from every corner of E17. It is organised by a team of volunteers who came together to form the Stow Festival Management Committee.
Hold on, did you say ‘award-winning’?
Oh yes. In 2011 we won the TalkTalk Digital Heroes Award (London region) for the collaboration between The Stow Festival and Walthamstow Scene. We were nominated by Walthamstow’s own Stella Creasy MP, and the award was voted for by you beautiful people, the public. Winning the award meant that we offered a paid internship to a young person from Walthamstow for the 2012 festival. In 2014, we were also nominated for “Best Grass-roots Festival” and “Best Metropolitan Festival” in the UK Festival Awards.
What is the ethos behind the festival?
The principles of the festival are:
- To showcase Walthamstow’s musical talent alongside hot new performers;
- To offer a music festival that is accessible to as many people as possible;
- To work with local businesses to promote Walthamstow as a place to visit.
Everything we do is organised at grassroots level. None of the organisers are paid, and if you’re wondering who is on the Management Committee, here we are. If you spot us at a gig, say hi!
Sounds great! So when it is on?
Stow Festival 2016 happened in September. We’re now taking a short break and will announce plans for 2017 soon.
